Zsolt Fekete: Cloud Factory (70×50 cm, oil/farost)
The playfulness of the title alone is enough to spark the imagination: where is the world’s first “cloud factory”, where lamb’s wool clouds roll off the conveyor belt in the morning, and storm clouds are made to order in the afternoon, or the soft pink puffs of twilight? Zsolt Fekete’s painting gives exactly this feeling: it is both real and fairy-tale-like, because we have all seen dramatic cloud towers in the sky, reminiscent of chimneys, but here it is the imagination that puts the finishing touches to it.
The technical basis of the painting is the meeting of oil paint and wood pulp. This substrate gives a particular texture, which the artist exploits: the clouds here are not just light vapour forms, but have weight, body, even industrial organisation. The interplay of light and shadow gives the composition a dynamic, and the subtle clash of cooler and warmer shades makes the whole thing spatial and vibrant. The colours of the painting are not garish, but rather elegantly rich: the transitions between blues, greys and whites are like the curtains of a stage that is forever changing.
The atmosphere is a strange duality. At the same time, we feel the freedom and lightness associated with clouds, and at the same time we have the association of the word “factory”: system, repetition, human intervention. It is this duality that makes the image so exciting – the meeting of nature and the artificial, in which beauty ultimately triumphs.
And here’s where the humour comes in: the Cloud Factory could be the central location of the Weather Corporation, where workers decide in the morning who gets sunshine, who gets soaking rain and who gets a dramatic storm. Perhaps it was on this very canvas that the ‘limited edition’ clouds were made, not by the wind but by an invisible shift that put them together for us.
The painting can be used in any interior, but it looks best where there is space and light to let the view unfold. On a bright wall, with a subdued frame and the right lighting, it can be both an inspiring thought-provoker and an eye-catching piece of home decor. It’s the ideal choice for someone who likes a piece of art that is not only beautiful, but also thought-provoking and makes you smile.
“Cloud Factory” is more than a landscape: it is a play on the boundaries of reality and imagination, served with technical certainty and artistic irony. It is a painting that is at once an experience, a reflection and a joy – one can hardly expect more from a contemporary work.
